Fulton Schools of Engineering Career Center

Online Career Exploration Night — Industry Professionals & Student Orgs

Industry professionals and Fulton Schools student organizations with formal education in aviation, engineering, technology, computer science, or any Fulton Schools of Engineering major, share your knowledge with Fulton freshmen. You represent YOU and your path from first year college student to student professional to industry professional!

The ONLINE Career Exploration Nights are different than past events. We are hosting small panels using Zoom webinars. We are seeking professionals from a variety of experience levels, roles, companies and industries representing each major. As such, we will inform all registrants if they have been selected. If registrants are not selected, there may be opportunity to speak to freshmen in their classes.

Civil and Construction students have been assigned to attend the Civil and Construction Career Fair. They will not attend a specialized panel. Your experience may be useful in the Data, Process Optimization and Management Panel.

What to Expect

What is expected from the professionals who attend? Small moderated panels will be asked major specific and general questions. Students will also be able to ask questions about various professions and their chosen major. This is an opportunity for professionals to share their college experiences, career history and advice with future innovators.

In advance:

Photo and releases: After registering, selected panelists will be asked to provide a photo plus a photo and recording release because the event is being recorded.

Equipment needed: You must have a computer, access to Zoom, a web camera and a microphone. Please test your equipment in the days leading up to the panel. You will be provided with an event Zoom login link specific to you.

Prepare: Think about your college days, internships and early career roles. Be ready to discuss your experiences and share what you wish you knew then.

The event:

Panels: Most events will host 2 small moderated panels of 4-6 panelists each. Typically the first panel will be held from 4:30-5:30 PM MST. The second panel with different panelists will be held 5:30-6:30 PM MST.

Login early: You will be provided a Zoom link specific to only you. Do not share it. When you login, you will be greeted by a “Green Room Manager” to ensure the panel is assembled. The first panelists will be asked to join 15-20 minutes early to ensure your webcam and/or microphone are working. The second panel will get a shorter amount of time to live test their equipment. If you are on the second panel, do not unmute yourself. The Green Room Manager will chat with you in the panelist chat room and unmute you when it is time. Please note, students will be in the Zoom webinar, so be careful with your mic check.

On screen: Depending on the event either each panelist will be on camera or a slide with each panelist’s name, title, company and major will be on screen.

Moderated panel: The panelists will be briefly introduced by a Fulton Schools staff moderator. The moderator will ask the panelists an initial list of questions, most of which will be shared with you in advance, so you can prepare. The moderator will use prompts such as “this question is for everyone,” then cue the first person by name to respond. Students will be able to ask questions via Zoom’s Q&A button. A Q&A moderator will read the question to the panel. The primary moderator will keep the conversation going and may need to cut responses shorter. When the panel has come to the end of the allotted time, the moderator will thank the panel. There will be a short break between panels. Students will be told they are welcome to stay for the next panel, or at the end of the event to logoff the webinar.

Cost: Free

How to Prepare

As part of a 5-7 person panel, be ready to answer such questions as:

  • Why did you pick your major rather than one that is similar or different?
  • What student organizations did you join, why and what did you do?
  • If you did an internship, what was it like? What would you have done differently?
  • What software and technical knowledge do you use and why?
  • What are some projects you have worked on as an intern, new grad or now?
  • Download the 2020 Career Exploration Night Workbook (when it is ready) to learn how students will prepare.

Please test your computer, webcam, microphone and access to Zoom in the days leading up to the panel. If you don’t have a company Zoom background, download ASU virtual backgrounds here. Not sure how to change your virtual background? Follow these instructions.
