Career exploration nights

Help pave the way for future engineering innovators

Industry professionals and Fulton Schools student orgs

ASU’s Engineering Career Center invites anyone with a formal education in engineering, computer science, information technology, technical management, or related technical disciplines to speak with our first year and transfer students about what you did in college to get to where you are NOW.

Industry guests and Fulton student organizations will be grouped at tables assigned to communities based on academic majors. Students, individually or in small groups, will move around the room and speak with professionals.

What will I do? Talk informally and be friendly. Share your knowledge with Fulton first year undergraduates. Represent YOUR path from first year college student to student professional to industry professional!

Answer students’ questions about why you picked your major, what you liked best, struggles you overcame, any internships and career-related extracurricular activities you did, and what you are doing now.

The more the merrier. Please share this page with colleagues. We are seeking 300+ professionals from a variety of experience levels, roles, companies, and industries representing each major.

What are the goals? Get students excited about career paths. Help first year students envision themselves as engineers and technical professionals. Informal conversations can make a difference by encouraging students to complete their degree, leading to more professionals in the workforce.

What do I bring? Bring yourself (and a bunch of your colleagues). Some professionals might bring small displays representing tools and projects.

Time Commitment: Come when you can. Leave when you must. Students will ebb and flow to speak with different professionals.

Dress Code: Casual and comfortable. Suggest company polo/t-shirt, jeans and tennis shoes.

Cost: The event is FREE.

Parking: We pay for parking in an approved lot.

Food: Light appetizers and refreshments at check-in.

Prepare Your Stories

This is an opportunity for professionals, Fulton student organizations and Fulton Difference program members to share their college experiences, career history and advice with future innovators.

Students will ask questions about various professions and their chosen major.

Think about your college days, internships and early career roles. Be ready to discuss your experiences and share what you wish you knew then.

How would you answer these questions:

Download the Career Exploration Night Workbook for Fall 2023 to review other questions.
Why did you pick your major rather than one that is similar or different?
What student organizations did you join, why and what did you do?
If you did an internship, what was it like? What would you have done differently?
What are some projects you have worked on as an intern, new grad or now?
What software and technical knowledge do you use and why?

Evening Agenda

Career Exploration Nights

Open to professionals who earned degrees correlating to our engineering, computer science, and other majors, not necessarily from ASU. Also open to ASU FSE student organizations.

We need hundreds of professionals and student organization leaders to meet first year undergraduate students in groups and individually as they come and go throughout the duration of the event. The spotlight is on you and your stories. If you’d like, bring your small projects and other items of interest, please do, though it is not expected.

Panels

ASU alumni are invited to apply to be on an IN-PERSON 3-4 person moderated panel. If selected, you will receive detailed instructions. Panelists will be briefly introduced. The moderator will ask initial questions, most of which will be shared with you in advance, so you can prepare. The audience can write questions in advance or stand up to ask questions. The moderator will use prompts such as “this question is for everyone,” then cue the first person by name to respond. The moderator will keep the conversation going or may need to cut responses short. When the panel has come to the end of the allotted time, the moderator will thank the panel. Stay after for an informal mixer.
